The very word inspires visions of the Moors and indeed the ancient town of Mojacar which stands high on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean was a stronghold of the Moors for centuries and many traces of their rule can still be seen.

This area of Almeria has for many years been part of hidden Spain and apart from the tourist appeal of the town of Mojacar very little has changed here over many years.

There has been a gradual change however over the last ten years and many people from Northern Europe are now attracted to the area because of its climate, its long sandy beaches and the feel of old Spain which still persists in the villages surrounding Mojacar at places such as Turre, Almanzora, Bedar, Antas and Vera.

Three golf courses, including the by now well-known Desert Springs and Valle del Este courses, have been opened in the last five years and another two are about to get underway.

The nearby port of Garrucha has a first class marina and for those who like their fish fresh there are numerous restaurants which are supplied in the main by the local fishing fleet. The area is one of the hottest and driest in Spain yet approximately two-and-a-half hours drive and you can go skiing in the Sierra Nevada.

Access by air is currently via Almeria Airport (45 mins), Murcia (San Javier) 1 hour 40 mins and Alicante Airport 1 hour 50 mins. There is within the next 2 years a new airport opening slightly to the south of Murcia City from which journey time should be about 50 minutes.
